Portrait of Madame Helleu with a Parasol (c.1899). Paul-César Helleu (French, 1859-1927). Oil on canvas.
In this dreamy portrait Madame Helleu is shown from an angle that lends her a certain grandeur, as if her silhouette were dominating the heavens. The brushwork is rich and intense. The milky white of the clouds and the lady’s clothes – she is wearing a stylish dress designed by Madeleine Chéruit – are brought to life with golden tints, and stand out against the soft blue ground with crystal sharpness.

The piano player (1913). Ulisse Caputo (Italian, 1872-1948). Oil on canvas.
Richard Miller was instrumental in persuading Caputo to abandon his sombre palette in favour of a new spectrum of colour. His paintings became brighter with vibrant tones. Here, the viewer is placed directly at the table, listening to the piano with a tea cup nearby. One of the figures is dreaming, lost in thought, which is typical of the artist’s work.
The Pink Dress. Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (Spanish, 1841-1920). Oil on panel.
Madrazo was known for his skillful genre scenes, such as this painting. A woman in an extravagant dress is enjoying her reading. The artist further entices the viewer with his beautiful painterly effects seen in the way that he conveys the extraordinary material of the dress, all bathed in light.
